Tumi
In 1975, New Jersey native Charlie Clifford left his corporate job to start a business selling South American-made leather bags. Today, that company—which he named Tumi, after an ancient Peruvian ceremonial knife—is one of the biggest brands in travel. Although heavy-duty Tumi luggage has received the lion’s share of the label’s acclaim, you can expect the same durability and workmanship in the brand’s everyday backpacks, wallets, and tech accessories.
